Structure of Tutorials:

Tutorials are an essential and compulsory component of this course. Tutorial attendance is compulsory and mandatory. As this course focuses on active learning, class participation is very important. Mere attendance will not guarantee full marks!

Tutorials run over a 11 week period. You are required to attend five 2 hour sessions. The first tutorial session will begin on the third week of September (September 19, 2011). The whole class will be divided into 8 tutorial groups, led by your tutor Harly.

Tutorial Objectives:

Tutorials are structured to provide students with the opportunity to engage in lively discussions regarding general issues/topics raised in lectures and the assigned readings

The primary objectives of tutorials are to give students an opportunity to:

Engage in meaningful discourse on how the media and creative arts shape our value system regarding beauty, body image and fashion and how our perceptions vary through history and across societies

Develop a framework to critically evaluate beauty conceptions within the context of their everyday lives

Investigate the cultural implications of defining beauty, body image and fashion with particular emphasis on Hong Kong standards of these definitions

Analyze Hong Kong concepts regarding beauty, body image and fashion and contrast these ideals with other Western and Asian concepts

IMPORTANT LECTURE UPDATE

November 23rd Lecture – Fashion Dress Activity

This is NOT a compulsory activity, just a way for students to explore the meaning of dress (not just fashion as a media or consumer issue). The lecture that day will be about the social meaning of dress so the activity is designed for students to do the following:

You can do this alone or with classmates, dress as part of subculture and observe how others respond to you, then come to class that day, and we’ll devote some time to discussing your observations and feelings about that subcultural fashion. They should wear the clothing that day, then observe others and their own feelings, and then come to class at 2:00pm to talk about it. Prize for the most original… to be determined by popular vote….

You can pick whatever subculture you like, but here are some for brainstorming….
reggae, scene, emo, goth, hiphop/rap, lolita, etc.

The lecture for this has been moved to Nov 23rd because we have been asked by registry if TVB can come to our class:

a) you may choose to come to class in your subcultural dress (this is voluntary)

b) if students do not want to be filmed, please let us know and we will ask TVB to avoid filming those persons (they can sit in a section where the camera won’t zoom in on.)

Dr Dean’s lecture on Tattoos will be scheduled on Nov 16th.
