Dr. Karen Laidler’s view on Sociology:
Why study sociology? I could go on forever about what sociology has to offer, but I’ll keep it short. Sociology offers students a way of seeing themselves, their community and society in a broader, creative and more critical manner. How? First, the discipline offers several perspectives or ways of thinking about how people interact and relate with each other. Second, it looks at how people relate in particular social arenas like education, family, politics, economy and religion. I am especially interested in youth issues, gender and crime, and substance abuse. But what are the practical aspects of sociology? Sociology prepares students for a variety of careers ranging from marketing to communications to law enforcement.
