Submission Details:
For all written assignments, please submit a hard copy in the white “Department of Sociology” mailbox outside Department Office KKL 12/F AND a soft copy via turnitin. Submission instructions can be found in Tutorial Outline.
Structure of Tutorials:
Tutorials are an essential and compulsory component of this course. Tutorial attendance is compulsory and mandatory. As this course focuses on active learning, class participation is very important. Mere attendance will not guarantee full marks!
Tutorials run over a 11 week period. You are required to attend five 2 hour sessions. The first tutorial session will begin on the third week of September (September 19, 2011). The whole class will be divided into 8 tutorial groups, led by your tutor Harly.
Tutorial Objectives:
- Tutorials are structured to provide students with the opportunity to engage in lively discussions regarding general issues/topics raised in lectures and the assigned readings
- The primary objectives of tutorials are to give students an opportunity to:
- Engage in meaningful discourse on how the media and creative arts shape our value system regarding beauty, body image and fashion and how our perceptions vary through history and across societies
- Develop a framework to critically evaluate beauty conceptions within the context of their everyday lives
- Investigate the cultural implications of defining beauty, body image and fashion with particular emphasis on Hong Kong standards of these definitions
- Analyze Hong Kong concepts regarding beauty, body image and fashion and contrast these ideals with other Western and Asian concepts
